Chapter 21: The Loophole
Dee's POV
He came across the sidewalk with a screwdriver in his hand and half of Penn Avenue watching.
I had not decided to say his name.
It had come out of my mouth without my asking, and now I was holding a pear and he was standing at my crates.
Up close he had grease on his jaw and a smear of it across the flat of his nose.
His blue eyes were doing their best to be calm.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
"That was a good speech."
"It wasn't a speech," I said.
"It was short," Nick said, "and it had numbers in it."
Somebody behind the apple crates coughed into a fist.
I put the pear in his empty hand, because I needed to give him something.
"I owe a man an answer," I said. "I've owed it since August, and I'm going to give it to him this week."
He looked at the pear.
"Then I'm going to text you," I said. "And you don't have to answer."
"Okay," he said.
He said it the old way, level, with no hope in it, and it landed in my chest.
"Nick."
"Yeah."
"That isn't a rule. That's me asking you to wait one more week," I said.
