Chapter 22: Twice
Nick's POV
I was at the bottom of Butler Street when her text came.
I stopped the bike in the middle of the road.
I had left the shop at seven with no plan except to ride past her house.
I had told myself I would ride past it once, slowly, and keep going.
It was Saturday night, and I had waited a week.
On Penn Avenue she had said my name in front of the whole street.
I typed back with my thumb, and I sent it before I could think: I'm already on my way.
She was standing on her stoop when I came up the block.
She wore a robe, and her hair was down, and she held her phone in her fist.
I put the bike against the railing.
Neither of us said anything.
She came down two steps.
Then she was close enough that I could smell the lavender she used on her pillowcases, which I knew from March.
"There was a man here," she said. "I told him no."
"The cook."
"Yes."
"Was he all right?" I said.
"He hugged me," Dee said, "and he'll live."
"Good."
"Nick."
"Yeah," I said.
"Take me to your shop."
"It's closed," I said.
"You have a key," she said.
I did.
She dressed fast and followed my bike down to Polish Hill in the Subaru, with the headlights in my back the whole way.
I unlocked the front door of the shop and pulled it shut behind us, and flipped every switch on the wall.
The tube lights banged on over the workbenches and the wheel racks and the bikes hanging from their hooks, hard and white.
She stood in the middle of the floor in her coat and looked around.
"Everything on," she said.
"I thought you'd want to see."
"I do."
She took the coat off and dropped it on the stand.
Underneath she wore a plain gray dress, and her hair came down around her shoulders, and she stood there with her hands open.
