Chapter 15: Alder
The county had said three days, and the grader got through on the seventh.
By afternoon the road to Alder was open.
Blaine drove with both hands tight on the wheel and did not speak for twenty miles.
Perry sat beside him with his boots on the dash, as they had agreed.
The road came down out of the pines, and the town spread out below them: a gas station, a grain elevator and a white church.
"Ten minutes," Blaine said. "You give me ten minutes. Then you come in."
"Ten minutes," Perry said.
"If I look like I'm going to hit him, you come in at five."
"Understood," Perry said.
The diner was called the Lantern, and it had red booths and a pie case and a jukebox nobody had fed since 1998.
Blaine's father sat in the back booth with a cup of coffee, and when the bell over the door rang he looked up and smiled.
Blaine had not seen that smile in twenty-two years.
It had gone gray at the edges.
The man was sixty-three, still tall and handsome in a loosened way.
His quilted jacket cost more than Blaine's truck.
He stood and opened his arms.
"Buddy," he said. "Look at you. Look how big you got."
