Chapter 21: Mine
When Blaine let go, the silence was so complete that Perry could hear the string lights humming.
His mouth was burning.
His knees had gone, and Blaine's hands were the only reason he was still upright.
Thirty people stared at them across the paper plates.
Nobody moved.
Then a chair scraped at the head of the table.
Dad stood.
He took his glass, which held water, because he had not touched the wine, and raised it to shoulder height with great solemnity.
"Hear, hear," he said.
For a second nothing happened.
Then the girl with the braid slapped both palms on the table and let out a whoop, high and shameless, that cracked across the clearing.
The boy who had been staring at the floor started clapping.
The TA put two fingers in his mouth and whistled.
All at once the whole long table was on its feet, thirty people stamping and cheering and banging forks on cups.
Someone at the back was yelling "Finally!" at the top of her lungs.
Perry put his hands over his face.
He was laughing, and somewhere in the laugh he was also crying.
Blaine's arm came around his shoulders and hauled him against his chest, and Blaine was laughing too, a huge, helpless sound that shook them both.
"Boys," Dad said, over the noise, wiping his eyes with the back of his sleeve. "Sit down and eat before it's cold."
At the head of the table Blaine's father had not moved.
He sat with his wine glass half raised and his smile fixed in place.
