Chapter 18: Four Versions
I wrote the first version on Bernie's kitchen table that same afternoon.
Four men were going to read it, and one of them was right.
My heroine walks into the underboss's office at night.
She tells him the Don's secret.
She hands him a gift, to prove she means it: the night and the place the Don's big container comes in.
Then she says yes.
That was the whole trick.
The paragraph was the only part I couldn't invent.
For that I needed nightshift.
On Sunday Nonna sent Rosalba to the salon with a pan of lasagna the size of a car door and a message.
"She says you're skipping dinner because you're proud," Rosalba said. "And that she was proud in 1962 and it got her nothing but a husband."
"Tell her I'm working."
"She knows. She said to eat while you work."
On Tuesday night I texted him.
His real number, the one he'd put in as my backup.
"Business," I wrote. "Salon. Ten o'clock. Bring your glasses."
He came at ten exactly.
Bernie had pulled the blinds and gone upstairs with the TV turned up so loud I could hear every word of a cooking show through the ceiling.
