Chapter 17: Lunch With the Underboss
"Don't go," Bernie said from the sofa.
She was sitting up in the dark with her ponytail half down, reading the text over my shoulder.
"He's offering lunch."
"He's offering lunch the way a spider offers a nap."
I typed back:
"Where?"
The answer came almost immediately.
He'd been waiting for it.
I didn't sleep.
I wrote instead, on Bernie's kitchen table, under the knocking radiator.
The real chapter fifteen.
It opened with my heroine saying "No" to a man in a doorway.
No weather.
No semicolons.
At five in the morning I sent it to the one reader who read first, because I'd initialed it on page two and I keep my terms.
His answer came in four minutes.
"Made me laugh twice. Page three and page seven. Your commas are untouched."
Then, a minute later: "Are you safe?"
I didn't answer that one.
I posted the chapter at six.
The restaurant was an old red-sauce place on Ninth Street with gold wallpaper and signed photos of singers nobody under sixty could name.
Raimondo had the back booth.
