Chapter 16: March

I took the phone out of my pocket.

The call was still open.

Forty-one minutes.

"Did you hear that?" I said.

A long breath on the other end.

"Yes."

"Is it true?"

"Yes."

He didn't explain.

He didn't say "Bee."

He just said yes.

"Don't come here," I said. "Go home. I'm coming to you."

I hung up before he could answer.

We took my father back to Gladwyne.

Bernie put him to bed on the white sofa.

The gate in Chestnut Hill opened before we reached it.

He was waiting in the study, standing, at the window where I'd first seen his back.

This time he was facing the door.

Bernie stayed in the kitchen with Nonna, who took one look at my face and put the kettle on.

I closed the study door.

"March," I said.

"March."

"Tell me. All of it. And don't you dare make it pretty."

He didn't sit down.

"You sent the message on a Tuesday, at two in the morning," he said. "I read it a dozen times."

"That's not the part I asked for."

"It's where it starts." His voice stayed level. "On Wednesday I pulled every marker in the city with Fogarty on it. Your father owed four different men in our family. I bought them all into my own name and barred him from our games."

"Why?"

"Because you'd just told me I didn't get to know you anymore. And I knew exactly who your father owed. If one of them called it in, they'd come to the house. Your house."

"So you knew in March that I was in danger."

"I knew in March what my stories were," he said. "I knew what was in your book. I knew if anyone at that table ever put honeybee and nightshift together, you'd be standing in the middle of it."

"And you put men on my house."
