Chapter 20: The Duel

The gym emptied fast after that.

Rhett walked out between two varsity boys without a word.

Cade stood at center court and looked at the empty folding chairs.

"You can yield," I said, low. "Tomorrow. Before it starts."

"If I yield, he's heir to the seat, and Peyton's father holds it for him." He picked a piece of dried mud off his sleeve. "The Run's back on the calendar by Christmas."

"Then don't yield."

"I wasn't planning to."

At three in the morning I walked out to the eastern border with two coffees in a paper bag.

He was at the fourth post, sitting on a stump with a silver knife across his knees, watching the dark trees.

He heard me coming a long way off.

"Rainier."

"Coach."

I gave him the coffee.

"You should be asleep," he said.

"So should you."

"I'm fighting a twenty-two-year-old at dawn. I'll sleep after."

"Is he good?"

"He's big. He's scared. That makes him dangerous for about two minutes." He looked at me. "Is that what you did? Up north? Forty-nine times?"

I sat down on the cold ground beside the stump.
