Chapter 14: Eleven Weeks
The boardroom at Rayburn Builders had a long walnut table and nine chairs.
Dolores sat at the head of it with her pearl earrings on and a single sheet of paper in front of her.
Dustin took his usual seat, four chairs down, and the room went quiet.
"This is a special session," Dolores said. "I am moving to suspend Dustin Rayburn as vice president, effective today."
The gray-haired partner put his pen down.
"On what grounds?"
"Conduct that exposes the firm. He cancelled a post he was sent to fill. He brought a personal scandal into this room last week. And he is party to a family dispute over trust assets that this board will have to defend."
"Dolores," the gray-haired partner said, "you abstained last week when we removed Coyle."
"I did."
"You sat there and said nothing while he forged a booking against your own son."
"I am not here to discuss Coyle."
"You should be," said a woman halfway down the table.
Dolores did not look at her.
"All in favor."
Dolores raised her hand.
Three partners raised theirs, slowly, without meeting Dustin's eyes.
"Opposed."
Four hands went up.
"Four to four," the gray-haired partner said. "The motion is tied, so it fails."
"I am the chair," Dolores said. "On a conduct motion the chair's vote counts double. Section nine of the bylaws."
The gray-haired partner turned a page, read it twice and sat back.
"She's right."
Dolores smiled for the first time that day.
"Five to four. Dustin, you may collect your things."
Dustin looked down the table at his mother.
He had not said a word.
He stood up, buttoned his jacket and put his access card on the walnut in front of her.
