Chapter 13: Graze

I got his coat open and found the hole in his side.

It was a furrow along the ribs, long and ugly, and nowhere near the heart.

I said a word I never say at work.

"It's a graze," I told the room. "He's breathing. Somebody get me a car."

The crews had scattered, tables on their sides, men flat on the carpet.

Ollie was already on his knees beside me with the car keys in his fist.

"Which way?" he asked.

"The loft. Not a hospital. Move."

Four of Jude's men lifted him and ran.

Crowe was gone from the head of the table.

So was the window shooter, whoever he had been, and so was the chance of finding him tonight.

I worked on Jude in the back seat with a flashlight in my teeth.

I packed the groove with gauze and pressed down with both hands while Ollie took corners on two wheels.

Jude opened his eyes once and looked at the car roof.
