Chapter 22: Awake
"He's alive," the surgeon said.
My knees went, and Bree caught me on one side and my father on the other.
"The fragment is out."
"It had started to dig into the wall. Another week and I could not have reached it."
"Is he awake?"
"Not yet. In an hour or two."
He wiped his forehead.
"His heart stopped once on the table. Briefly. It started again on its own."
"How briefly?"
"Ten seconds."
Ten seconds.
I had counted much longer ones in my life, and never once had it mattered.
"May I see him?" I asked.
"One person, five minutes."
"I'm a nurse."
"I know. That's why I'm letting you."
He almost smiled.
"The new anesthesiologist was very nervous. I have never seen a man so careful."
They gave me a gown and a mask and let me through the doors.
The recovery room was bright and cold and full of small sounds.
