Chapter 17: The Platform
The ring boy answered my text in under a minute.
Station in town. The 9:50. He's got the telescope.
The senior shuttle to town left at nine-thirty from the chapel loop.
I made it by running, in my uniform skirt, with my blazer flapping open.
The platform was a single concrete strip beside the tracks, with one bench, one vending machine, and a sign that said NORTHBOUND.
Jude sat on the bench with a duffel at his feet and the brass telescope in a canvas case across his knees.
He looked up when my shoes hit the concrete.
He didn't stand.
"You shouldn't be here," he said.
"You left."
"I'm expelled in two days. I thought I'd save them the paperwork."
"You said you would take your hearing."
"I did." His mouth went crooked.
"I lost my nerve about the second half."
I sat down at the other end of the bench.
The tracks hummed, a long way off.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"What you did. In sentences. Not 'it was a bet.' Not 'I was bored.'"
"Say each thing you did, one at a time, to my face."
He stared at the telescope case.
Then he turned and looked straight at me, and I saw how much it cost him.
