Chapter 20: The Vote
Ezra stepped in front of me.
"Give me the phone, Preston."
"Come and take it." Preston's smile was back, thin and fast. "It's all on here. The desk, the noise, your little speech about the whole building."
My stomach turned over.
"I'm going to play it for the board at nine," he said. "I'll be the resident who caught his attending with a nurse. Withdraw the petition, and I'll delete it."
"No," I said.
"Brynn."
"Play it, Preston."
Ezra turned his head to look at me.
"I mean it," I said. "Play every second."
Preston's smile slipped.
He had expected me to beg.
At nine the next morning the board room was crowded to the doors.
Twelve people sat around a long table, and the orderly sat on a chair against the wall, sweating through his shirt.
Preston's father was not at the table.
Dee had told me he was in the building, in an office down the hall, waiting to see how his son did.
The chair called us to order in the same flat voice.
Preston asked to speak first.
He stood up with his lawyer beside him and held out his phone.
"I have evidence," he said, "that Dr. Finbarr and Nurse Caldwell engaged in sexual conduct in his office last night, in violation of hospital policy."
A man at the table cleared his throat.
"Dr. Gaines. Where did you get this?"
"I recorded it."
"How?"
"Through the door."
He pressed a button.
The speaker crackled, and the room heard my voice, thin and broken, through an inch of wood.
Ezra's voice came next. Let them hear. I want the whole building to know.
Then my cry.
Somebody on the left of the table looked at the ceiling.
Preston stopped it and looked around with a grim sort of triumph.
