Chapter 17: The Club Votes
The special meeting was held in the small ballroom, under the portraits of past club presidents.
Rows of gold chairs faced a long table where the board sat with a gavel and a ballot box.
My father had resigned his membership, so he sat in the visitors' row with Cassidy and me.
My uncle, my mother's brother, sat two seats down with his jaw set.
I counted one hundred and forty members.
It was more people than had come to the anniversary.
My mother entered last, through the side door, in a navy suit with no jewelry at all.
She had done her hair and her face.
She looked like a woman who has dressed for her own trial and refuses to look afraid.
She took the chair reserved for the member under review and folded her hands.
She did not look at the visitors' row, not even at my father.
The club president, the silver-haired woman, rapped the gavel.
"Mrs. Kettering has been a member for thirty-one years," she said.
"The motion before us is for her removal, on grounds of misrepresentation, conduct unbecoming, and harassment of other members."
