Chapter 18: Albert Chooses

Leon was in my driveway before I had my second shoe on.

I had not called him.

My neighbor had texted him from my kitchen, where she was reading to Junie, and she had not asked my permission.

"I'll drive," he said. "I'll stay in the car."

"You keep saying that."

"I keep meaning it."

The Fulton store was dark except for a single light in the back lot, over the loading door.

My mother stood under it in her camel coat.

One fist was raised against a steel door that already had a dent at the height of her knuckles.

"Albert!" she was shouting. "Albert, you open this door! I am your wife!"

I got out of the car.

She heard my shoes on the gravel and spun around.

Her hair had come loose on one side, and she smelled of the club's perfume.

"Tell him," she said. "Tell him to open it."

"It's his door, Mom."

"He's sleeping in a storeroom! At his age! Because of you!"

"Because of you."

"Do you know what people will say?"

"They've already said it. Thursday, in the ballroom, a hundred and twenty-three times."
