Chapter 19: Leon Meets The Family
On the first Sunday in November my kitchen held four more people than it was built for.
My father sat at the head of the table in a clean flannel shirt.
Cassidy sat across from him in a borrowed sweater, with her hands around a mug.
Junie had assigned the seats on index cards.
Leon's card said GUEST ON PROBATION, and it was placed at the end by the door.
"Don't read too much into it," I told him.
"It's accurate."
"It's very accurate."
My father looked at the card, then at the tall man in a grey sweater holding a bag of dinner rolls.
"Mr. Brannigan."
"Mr. Kettering."
"You lent me four million dollars."
"I forgave it, sir."
"I know you did. I'm going to pay it back anyway."
Leon put the rolls down.
"Sir, you don't..."
"A thousand dollars a month for as long as I'm alive. If you don't want it, put it in the church basket."
"I'll put it in the basket," Leon said slowly.
"Good. Sit."
He sat.
Cassidy had not looked at him once.
"Cass," I said.
