Chapter 20: Geraldine Alone

I put on my robe and went down in bare feet.

Leon was already at the top of the stairs, buttoning his shirt.

"Stay up there," I said.

"I'll be on the landing."

"That's fine."

I opened the front door.

My mother stood in the rain with no umbrella, and water ran off her hair onto the collar of the camel coat.

She had no suitcase this time, and no purse.

"May I come in?"

I thought about it for as long as it took a car to pass.

"You can come in. You can't stay."

She stepped over the threshold.

I did not offer to take her coat.

She stood on my rug, dripping, and looked around at the living room she had never entered until last month.

"The house is empty," she said. "Your father is at the store. Your sister won't answer."

She swallowed.

"Nobody from the committee will answer either. I have been calling since Thursday."
