Chapter 21: Junie's Answer
"I'm not going to decide this for you," I told Junie at seven the next morning.
She sat on the counter in her pajamas, eating dry cereal out of her hand.
"Decide what?"
"Grandma wants to see you. She asked last night. She was crying."
"Was she mean?"
"She wasn't mean last night. She was sad. I don't know yet which one she'll be tomorrow."
Junie chewed for a long time.
"Does she have to come to the wall?"
"That's up to you."
"It's my wall," Junie said.
"It's your wall."
She considered it, swinging her feet against the cabinet.
"Okay. She can come after school. But I'm reading it to her. She can't just look."
"Okay."
"And you're in the room."
"I'm in the room."
"And Leon's not," Junie added. "He'd make it weird."
My mother arrived at four sharp.
She wore the cream blouse from the brunch, and her pearls, and no coat.
I could see her pulse beating in her neck.
In her hands was a manila folder, and a flat white envelope.
