Chapter 22: The Proposal
On Saturday morning Leon asked my father to cut him a key.
I only knew because Junie had insisted we go to the Fulton store for her weekly stamp of the receipts.
My father was behind the hardware counter at ten sharp.
Eight customers browsed the aisles.
A clerk rang up a box of lightbulbs, and the bell over the front door jingled.
Leon walked in wearing his charcoal coat, with a plain brass key in his hand.
"Mr. Kettering," he said. "I need a copy of this."
"For what lock?"
"My front door."
My father took it, turned it over, and ran it through the blank on the grinder.
The machine screamed for a moment.
He blew the shavings off the new key and set it on the counter.
Leon did not pick it up.
"Marlena," he said, without turning around. "Come here, please."
I was in the paint aisle, holding a paint chip the color of pancakes.
I walked to the counter slowly.
A woman in a green coat had stopped halfway down the plumbing aisle, a pair of washers in her fist.
