Chapter 26: Eve
Desmond hung up on the old lawyer without saying goodbye.
The managing partner reached out and ended the call on my phone with one fingertip.
"He knows," my old lawyer said. His mouth was gray. "He knows, he'll run, he'll be gone tonight."
"He won't," I said.
"How can you..."
"Because he needs a signature at ten o'clock and a seven-year-old at noon.
"He'll sit in his chair and smile.
"A man like that can't leave a thing he's already counted."
The detective closed her notebook.
"I'll have two plainclothes in the tower lobby by seven," she said. "One at the school."
"The school's on Fullerton."
"I know where it is, Ms. Corrigan."
That evening Hester sat in her chair under the lamp with the duck cane across her knees.
"I want to read it myself," she said.
"The page?"
"Out loud, at a table of men who buy supermarkets in lots of three.
"I want to hear his voice come out of my mouth."
"The Chairman will let you."
"The Chairman had better."
She unscrewed the duck's head, slid the paper out, and looked at it.
"Forty-one years I was married to a man who never wrote a sentence he could say instead."
"He wrote this one."
