Chapter 25: The Old Lawyer
The conference room on the forty-first floor had glass walls and a table long enough to land a plane on.
On Monday morning six partners sat along one side of it in their good suits.
The managing partner sat at the head, in the dark green dress, with her hands folded over a thick manila envelope.
My old lawyer stood at the foot.
He had been on leave for a week, and it showed.
The tan had gone yellow, and his collar stood away from his neck.
He saw me come in, and his chin lifted a stubborn quarter inch.
It was how he used to look when he told me what the jury would think.
"I want it noted that I've been advised not to speak," he said.
"By whom?" said the managing partner.
"By myself."
"Noted. Sit down."
He did not sit, and he looked about nine years old.
I did not sit.
A woman in a gray raincoat had followed me in and taken the chair by the door.
She was fifty, with reading glasses on a cord and the tired, patient face of someone who had read a great many ledgers.
