Chapter 24: The Zoo
Saturday at nine o'clock Hester's hot plate held two pans, and every dryer below us was running.
"It's a ceremony," my grandmother told the social worker, who sat at the kitchen table with her clipboard and a plate. "Eat."
The judge had signed the outing on Wednesday afternoon, before Desmond's lawyers finished their coffee.
Saturday, nine to three, breakfast and a place of the child's choosing, the social worker attending.
Desmond had not fought it.
He could not fight anything this week.
A detective kept calling the Chairman's office, and the television still replayed his face.
Posy came up the stairs in her yellow coat, holding the social worker's hand.
She stopped in the doorway.
Her eyes went around the room: the hot plate, the cane, the sugar bowl with a secret in it.
They landed on Garret.
He was standing at the stove in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, which Hester had bought in 1994 and never explained.
