Chapter 29: Pickup
They took Desmond out through the revolving door with a hand on his head.
The photographers on the pavement were three deep, and he had to walk through every flash.
He did not look back at me.
I watched the door spin until it stopped.
"Ms. Corrigan."
The detective stood at my elbow with a second pair of cuffs on her belt, and her face had gone careful.
"I have to take Mrs. Roarke in as well."
Lydia was at the foot of the stairs, small under that tall banner.
She had been waiting there for the officers to see her.
"I know," she said. "I'd like to walk."
"You can walk."
She held out her wrists, the splint and the good one, in front of three hundred people.
The detective looked at them for a moment and then fastened the cuff on the good one only, loosely, and left the splint alone.
It was a small mercy, and Lydia saw it.
She crossed the lobby between two officers with her head up.
The green vests parted without a sound.
