Chapter 27: What He Gives Without Claiming

Kael followed her into the guest room and stopped three steps past the threshold with both hands open at his sides, the way a man stands when he has been told to wait.

Sera closed the door. The iron latch dropped with a sound that carried in the small room, and she let it sit between them before she turned around.

'You said you would not lift the writ with your seal,' she said. 'Say the rest of it.'

'Which rest.'

'You know which.' She set the birth-cord seal on the washstand and did not look at it again. 'Say what you will not use.'

Kael looked at the closed door, then at her. He had spent the whole day being read aloud to by guards and scribes and elders, and now there was no one in the room to record him but her.

'I won't use the twins,' he said. 'Not the writ, not the grant, not a guardianship line. I won't use the founding name to keep you inside the border, and I won't use pack law to make you answer me.'

'Again.'

'Sera.'

'Again, Kael.'

He said it again. Slower, and this time he did not look away from her while he said it, and she heard the words land in the room like something set down on a table and left there.
