Chapter 26: The Receipt's Second Name

Sera took the receipt out of Kael's hand before he could fold it away.

He had already turned toward the sanctuary door. His shoulders were set, and she knew the shape of that walk. It was the walk a man used when he had decided the fastest way to end a problem was to go put his hands on it.

'You will not go to her house,' Sera said.

Kael stopped. He did not turn around. 'She paid to have a child carried out of a market town. That child was you.'

'That is what the paper says. It is not yet what anyone has agreed to.'

He turned then. In the lantern light his face did the thing she had learned to read two lives ago. He was not angry at her. He was angry that she was right and that being right was slower.

Cass stood by the inner door with her hands clasped behind her back, upright as a fence post. Dov had come in from the corridor at the noise and stood with her arms folded, watching all of it.

Sera walked to the small table where Cass had laid her open ledger, the one she used for the sanctuary's witness notes. She set the receipt down flat across the page, face up, so the payer's line sat in the lamplight for anyone who cared to look.

'Read the name,' she said.

Cass looked at it. She did not pick it up. She read it the way a woman reads a document she already knows the shape of and had hoped never to see again.
