Chapter 25: The Luna Who Overruled the Alpha

Sera did not answer the window. She turned her back on it and walked to the captain, took the bound journal out of his hands, and opened it to the order Kael had written under the last signed page.

'Read this one first,' she said. 'Aloud. Then read the writ.'

The captain looked at Kael. Kael gave him nothing, which was the same as yes.

'By order of the Alpha, dated this morning,' the captain read, 'the council bench, its scribe, and all witnesses on the pack rolls are convened to the sanctuary at Elder Maren's chamber to receive her sworn testimony.'

At the gatehouse window, Lirien's fingers went still on the sill.

'Now the writ,' Sera said.

The captain turned the page. 'Detention of the respondent and her unborn heirs inside the territory until the bloodline challenge is decided. Signed by the acting Luna, who commands the sanctuary gate until the panel rules.'

Sera let the two documents sit in the air between the guards, side by side, both lawful, both sealed. Neither of them said the other was void. That was the whole problem, and every man at the gate could now see it.

'Acting Luna,' Sera said, to the window. 'You asked whether the Alpha's order has any force. The captain has just read you the answer. It has whatever force you allow it.'
