Chapter 23: Signed

Jocelyn's letter was one page, in her small neat hand, on the jail's lined paper.

Annie gave it to me on the porch, and I read it standing in the cold.

I'm going to plead. It will save everyone the trial. Tell Junie her godmother is sorry. Nat, we were friends for fifteen years. Don't let that be for nothing.

I read it twice.

Then I walked inside and put it on the fire, and watched the paper curl and go black.

"Aren't you going to answer?" Annie asked.

"I did."

On Christmas Eve, Junie slept at a classmate's house two streets from Patrick's.

I had driven her there myself, in her pajamas, with her overnight bag and her toothbrush in a sandwich bag.

"Be good," I said at the door.

"Be good yourself," Junie said, and hugged me around the knees.

I got back in the car, and Patrick was waiting in the passenger seat.

"She told me to be good too," he said. "I think she knows."

"She's five."

"I think she knows everything."

His house on the north side of Lincoln Park was dark, except for the kitchen light and a candle on the stairs.

"You've been planning something," I said.

"I've been waiting. It's different."

He hung my coat on the hook and took my hand, and led me upstairs.

His bedroom was plain, with a wide bed, a wool blanket and a window onto the snowy street.

On the pillow lay a sheet of cream paper, folded once, and a small velvet box on top of it.
