Chapter 4: Macarons in the Rain

Two days later, Gabriel drove us to the bridal boutique in the rain.

I sat in the back seat with my bandaged hand in my lap. Rosalind sat up front with her head on his shoulder.

The wedding gown was ready for its last fitting. I had been ordered to come and carry her shawl.

"Gabe," Rosalind said softly, "I want macarons. The French ones, from the little shop on the south side."

"We'll be late for the fitting."

She looked at me in the mirror, and then at him, and he understood.

"Camille," he said. "Go and get them."

The rain hit the roof so hard I could barely hear him.

"The shop is forty minutes in this weather," I said. "I can phone an order in."

"Freshly baked," Rosalind said. "It has to be freshly baked. I'm so sorry to trouble you."

"What, you can't do one small thing?" Gabriel said. His voice had gone flat. "Get out."

I did not move.

He stopped the car in the middle of the road.

He leaned across the seat and threw my door open.

Then he shoved me out by the shoulder.

I landed on my hands and knees in a puddle of mud.

The car drove off, and the tires sprayed brown water over my face and hair.

I stayed there for a second with my eyes shut. Then I got up.

At the bakery on the south side, a clerk looked at my dripping coat and apologized. They were sold out, and a new batch would take an hour.
