Chapter 5: Down for Service

I woke up under three heated blankets with a needle in my arm.

A doctor stood at the foot of the bed with a chart.

"Your core temperature was ninety-one degrees when they brought you in," he said. "Another half hour in that rain, and we wouldn't be talking."

"Who brought me?"

"Your brother. He carried you through the emergency doors himself and refused to put you down."

I looked at the ceiling.

I could still hear his heart going wild against my ear.

It meant nothing. In the first life, he had also saved me from a few small deaths, so he could keep me for the long one.

"You're staying two nights," the doctor said. "No arguments."

When he left, I called Zurich.

The lawyer picked up on the second ring.

"The clause stands," he said, when I had asked it twice. "If he marries without your signed consent, the proxy ends, the shares revert and the chair falls vacant that day."

"And he can't see the file?"

"Nobody can, Miss Lockwood. Not until you open it."

I hung up, my shoulders dropping.

The door opened, and Trenton came in with a thermos and a paper bag.

"They told me at the desk you were awake," he said. "I brought soup. Chicken, not vegetable. I thought you'd had enough of that."

I almost laughed.

He pulled the chair close and unscrewed the lid for me, and the steam rose between us.
