Chapter 6: The Message He Sent

Gabriel's POV

At midnight I told Rosalind I had a late meeting, and I drove back to the hospital alone.

I sat on a plastic chair outside Camille's room with my coat still on.

I had washed my hands twice that day. I could still feel her blood dried under my nails.

The night nurse told me she was asleep.

"Your friend left at nine," she said. "Mr. Hightower. He only stayed a few minutes."

I nodded and didn't go in.

I had come back with one job. Reach the wedding, keep Rosalind alive, keep her baby alive, and never again stand in the rain behind a coffin.

That was the whole plan, and it had been clean.

Then my sister walked out of a boutique into a storm, and I went after her without deciding to.

I remembered how she fell, and how little she weighed.

In my first life, I had carried her like that exactly once.

It was in the fortieth year. She had a fever, and she was so thin.

I put her down on the bed and walked out.

The doctors told me later she was dying. I told the butler I didn't want to hear it.

At the end, she asked for me. She sent word through the butler three times.
