Chapter 6: Eating Less

I deposited the check on Monday morning before my first class, and the teller counted the zeros twice.

Then I turned off the family location plan on my phone and bought a bagel at full price, with cream cheese.

It was the best thing I had ever eaten.

At one o'clock, I saw Savannah.

She was standing in the middle of the quad with six friends, and every one of them was holding a phone.

She wore a white cardigan and no makeup, and her eyes were red.

She had never come to this campus on a Monday before. She had a car and a standing brunch.

"Cadence," she called, in a voice that carried. "Please. Can we talk?"

Students stopped on the grass to watch.

I stayed where I was, six feet from the steps, with my backpack on one shoulder.

"I just want to say I'm sorry." Her voice cracked in exactly the right place. "I was in a bad place. I was lonely, and I was scared you'd take my family. I made terrible choices, and I'll spend my whole life making it right."

One of her friends was filming. Another was crying on cue.

Somewhere behind me, a boy said, "Oh my God, is that her?"

I understood the stage. This was a statement for the internet, and my mother had probably written half of it.
