Chapter 32: The Same Aisle
"Hold on, Father," I said.
I put my hand over the phone.
Cesare was still looking up at the brass Y.
"You called the church," I said.
"I called to ask if it was free," he said. "I didn't book it. I wouldn't book it without you."
"You asked first."
"I asked first." He finally looked at me. "Now I'm asking you."
The barber had stopped packing up his drill.
The old men had stopped telling me I'd done it wrong.
My mother leaned on her broom in the doorway and didn't breathe.
I took my hand off the phone.
"Father," I said. "Book it. October 9. And I'm walking myself."
On October 9, it rained in the morning and cleared by noon.
Four years to the day.
The church in Bensonhurst smelled of wax and wet coats, the way it had the first time.
Every pew was full.
The capos and their wives sat on the left, the way they always sat at Lanza weddings and funerals.
The cousins from Staten Island. The men from the social club in Gravesend, in their good suits.
The underboss sat in the third row with his hat on his knee.
On the right sat everybody else.
