Chapter 10: The Box

I played the memo a second time.

"Daddy," Poppy whispered. "Mama has a box with a flag in it. It has your name on it. Call this phone. Don't call Mama's phone."

I looked at the number.

It was not Cassidy's.

Carys sat up in the hay beside me, with straw in her hair and her face gone serious.

"That's your daughter," she said.

"Yes."

"Where is she calling from?"

"I don't know."

I called the number.

It rang twice, and a small voice picked up.

"Daddy?"

"Poppy," I said. "Baby, where are you?"

"In the bathroom at school," she whispered. "I took Mama's other phone out of the box. It was under the flag. It's black and ugly."

My hand tightened on the phone.

"Is anyone with you?"

"No. The teacher thinks I have a tummy ache."

"You're so brave," I said. "You're the bravest girl I know. Listen to me carefully."

"I'm listening."

"At recess, go to the back fence by the big oak," I said. "A lady in a red truck will be there. She has a braid. She was at the hearing. Give her the black phone, and nothing else."

"The bull lady?"

"The bull lady."

"Okay, Daddy," she said. "Are you coming to get me?"

"Soon," I said. "I promise."

She hung up.

Carys was already pulling on her jeans.

We were at the school by ten.

I stayed in the truck, six hundred feet down the road with the engine off.

The court order said five hundred.

I was not going to give Cassidy one more reason.

Through the scope of Carys's husband's rifle, I watched a flock of small children pour onto the playground.
