Chapter 11: The Second Page

Conroy's POV

I sat in the study until three in the morning with the second page of the file open on the desk.

My driver had brought it at one.

He had put it down without a word and gone, because he knew what it said and he knew me.

Page two said it plainly.

Three years ago a freight truck ran a red light on Route 28 and took the driver's side of my car.

The lease on that truck had been signed by Howard Drummond.

I read the line again.

I had known it for a long time in the way you know a thing you cannot prove.

Now I could prove it.

Tonight Howard had stood on my steps and said a road is a road.

He had said it to my face.

He was not afraid of me.

That was the part I could not put down.

I turned off the lamp and sat in the dark.

I had told Eden that our engagement was a reasonable arrangement.

I had said I could have refused it.

I had not told her that I had asked for it.

Four months ago I had gone to Howard Drummond myself and offered a merger of the families, because it was the only way into his house.

I wanted to see his study, his accounts and the people at his table.
