Chapter 11: Livia Is Tough
Livia's POV
My mother came through the bedroom door at half past six with her cardigan buttoned wrong.
I had never seen her buttoned wrong in my life.
Paolo came behind her, grey in the face, and Fiorella behind him with her handkerchief already out.
The room was dim.
Lorenzo lay in the big bed with his eyes shut and his breathing slow, and a cold cloth on his forehead.
The doctor stood at the foot with a clipboard.
My mother stopped in the doorway.
She looked at the man in the bed for a long time.
Her chin trembled, and I realized she was not grieving.
She was trying not to smile.
"Mama," I said, and stood up from the chair.
She crossed the carpet and took both my hands.
"My brave girl," she whispered. "Is he really? Is he truly?"
"The doctor says it's bad."
"How long?"
"A few hours."
She closed her eyes.
Her lips moved.
I thought she was praying, and then I understood she was thanking someone.
"Livia," she said, opening them. "Listen to me now. Quickly. When his men ask, you say he drank too much. You say he was drinking on his own after dinner and you tried to stop him. You never touched his glass."
"I never touched his glass," I repeated.
"Good. Don't say anything else. Not a word about the bag, or the dress."
"What bag, Mama?"
Her eyes flickered.
"Nothing. Your suitcase." She patted my cheek. "You've been so strong. When it's finished, Paolo will come and take you home, and we'll never speak of this house again."
I looked at Paolo.
