Chapter 21: Her Daughter

The doctor came down the stairs in her socks with her glasses pushed up into her gray hair and took one look at the tile.

"Yellow room," she said. "Now. Both of you will walk, slowly, and I will carry the bag."

"Both of us?" said Gwen.

"One of them is lying about a pinch."

I opened my mouth, and the doctor pointed a finger at me without turning around.

"Later," she said.

The yellow room had changed since Christmas.

Nunzio and Orazio had built the crib in March, grunting over the instructions, and Gwen had hung a mobile of tiny felt hummingbirds above it.

The rocking chair had a quilt over its arm, and the lamb lamp was lit.

The doctor spread a waterproof sheet over the narrow bed, and Fabrizia lay back on it with her hair coming down.

"I'm a little afraid," she said to the ceiling.

"Good," said the doctor. "So am I. We'll be afraid together and get her out."

The first hour was breath.

Fabrizia held my hand through each wave.

I counted for her up to thirty, the way I count when I'm rinsing a color.
