Chapter 19: The Rescue

The boat was waiting at the water gate with Mi-rae at the oars and Ye-han's trunk in the bow.

She had fetched it from the Leader's chamber on the way out.

Ye-han opened it in the grey light, kneeling on the planks, and pulled out the red.

It was the full red, the wedding red, with gold chain at the collar and black silk under the sleeves.

There was a spare fan at the bottom, iron-ribbed, with its edges still sharp.

Chun-sik had packed it.

Ye-han never found out when.

"What are you doing?" said Gyeong-wook.

"Dressing."

"For what?"

"For my father's regent," Ye-han said.

He took out the kohl pot and lined his eyes using the water in a tin cup as a mirror, steady as a surgeon.

"Ma cannot say the word shield in front of his own men.

"Do you see?

"If the Cult hears its regent call the Young Lord a decoy, it also hears that the regent lied to it for nineteen years."

Gyeong-wook said nothing.

Ye-han fastened the last gold chain.

"Two hundred men follow me into that camp because they were told I am the heir.

"I am going to be the heir at them, all afternoon.

"It is the one thing I am any good at."

"You are good at a great deal."

"Then I'll do a great deal.

"Ma has Ju-won in his tent.

"He will not release him to the Leader.
