Chapter 16: Snow in the Spring Water

The snow lay a foot deep on the cedars by the third night.

Mikkel carried a lantern up the creek, with a tin of beeswax oil in his coat pocket.

"You're taking us to the spring," I said.

"I'm taking you to the spring," he said. "Anders is following because he can't help it."

"I can help it," Anders said, behind us.

He did not stop following.

The basin steamed into the falling snow, and the flakes vanished a hand's breadth above the water.

We stripped on the flat rock with our breath smoking.

I went in first.

The heat closed over my skin so suddenly that I moaned, and both of them laughed at me from the bank.

Then they came in on either side, and the water rose around the three of us.

I sat on the stone shelf with a man at each shoulder and tipped my head back.

Snow melted on my face.

Anders's arm lay along the rock behind my neck.

Mikkel's hand lay under the water on my knee, and nobody was being careful with anybody.

"This is the best thing that has ever happened to me," Mikkel said, to the dark.

"The water?" I said.

"The three of us in it. In the open. I keep thinking someone will come over the ridge and shout."

"Nobody will," Anders said.

"I know. It's still the best thing."

I turned and kissed him, and then I turned the other way and kissed Anders, and they watched each other over my head.
