Chapter 8: The Table

I did not sit in my old chair.

A place had been laid for me at the old man's left hand, with a card in his stiff writing, and I sat there.

Renzo stayed in the doorway with his back to the wall and his arms folded.

Nobody had laid him a place.

The old man leaned toward me and said very quietly, in English, "Go on."

I took the family iPad out of my bag and set it on the white tablecloth, next to the lamb.

"I won't read you what you already know," I said, in Italian, so the whole room could follow. "Most of you wrote it."

A cousin at the far end started to push his chair back.

"Sit," the old man said, without raising his voice, and the cousin sat.

I opened the chat.

"Gianna wrote to Dario's mother last Thursday." I found the line and read it flat. "'When the baby comes, put her in the guest room and keep the door shut. I'll take the nursery.'"

Gianna's face went white under the powder.

"That was private," she said.

"It was in a chat of nine people."

Her father, across the table, lowered his napkin.

"What does that mean?" he asked her. "Take the nursery?"

"Papa, it's nothing."

"And this," I said, and scrolled to another line. "Adele wrote on the night I told Dario I might be pregnant. 'Book her with our doctor, and no other. Anyone she sees outside our doctor will tell her too much.'"

I looked up the table.

"Is that true, Adele?"

Adele laid her fork down.

She was still smiling, a small warm sorry smile, the smile she wore at christenings.
