Chapter 12: The Chair

My second act as chairman, after taking Lyle's keys, was a phone call to the chair of the hospital board.

I told him I'd be at his Monday meeting.

The Carrow Foundation gave St. Anne's four million dollars a year, and he did not make me wait.

Hannah walked in beside me in her grey cardigan and her glasses.

Eleven people sat around the table in the board room.

The chair, a heavy man whose name was on half the donor plaques in the lobby, stood to shake my hand.

"Mr. Carrow. We're honored. Though I was told this was a courtesy visit."

"It's about a letter," I said. "On your letterhead, copied to my foundation."

I set it on the table.

It was the suspension notice, with the line at the bottom.

*Cc: L. Carrow, Carrow Foundation.*

"The foundation never asked for any review of Dr. Brooks," I said. "Lyle no longer speaks for it. As of Friday he doesn't speak for the company either. Who asked you to send this?"

The chair's face went red.

"It was a courtesy. Mr. Carrow told me the treatment had been irregular. Uninsured. Unbilled."

"It was my treatment. I'm the patient." I laid a second page on the table. "This is a payment agreement. I'll pay for my treatment, including Dr. Brooks's care, at hospital rates, in monthly installments, starting today. I read every line of it before I signed."

"We'd have written it off," a woman at the end said.

"You'd have written it off after my brother cancelled my insurance. I don't want it written off." I looked around the table. "I want the surgeon who rebuilt my leg back on the schedule by Wednesday."

The chair looked at the faces on both sides of him.

"All in favor?"

Eleven hands went up.

Hannah was reinstated before I had finished sitting down.

In the corridor she walked half a step ahead of me, fast, and I kept up on my cane.
