Chapter 4: The Apology

I held the phone against my ear and looked at my father through the glass.

"Fine," I said.

"Fine you'll do it?"

"I'll record it tonight."

"Good boy," Sonia said.

She had never called me that.

The line went dead before I could answer.

I stood in a bathroom stall and filmed it on my first phone, one take, with the tap running behind me.

"My name is Wesley Thornton. For six years I pressured Sonia Rhodes into a relationship she didn't want. I used a young man's debts to keep her. I apologize to her and to Jace Macpherson."

My voice came out flat.

I sent the file to the number she had given me and washed my face.

Ten minutes later, the hospital billing office called.

"Mr. Thornton, the deposit has been paid in full. Sixty thousand dollars. The surgeon will operate Thursday."

"Who paid it?"

"It came through a foundation. I only have the transfer number."

I thanked her and hung up.

My father was going to live through the week.

I let myself sit on the edge of a hospital chair for the first time in two days.

My phone lit up with a notification from the feed.

Wesley Thornton Confesses.

I opened it.

It was my video.

But the first four seconds had been cut and replaced, and a second clip had been spliced in at the end.

In it, my own voice said: "I moved the money through my company to keep her quiet."

I had never said that.

I played it three times.
