Chapter 5: Larkin Street
I went to Larkin Street at eleven that night to get my mother's ring.
It was in the drawer by the bed, in a velvet pouch, under the watch my father had given me at twenty-one.
I had left both there in the rush the morning of the awards.
I still had my key.
The living room light was off.
A strip of yellow came from under the bedroom door, along with a woman's laugh.
I knew the laugh.
I stood in the dark hallway with my hand on the wall.
"Sonia," Jace said, and his voice was low and uneasy. "Are you sure this is safe? Wesley might have real pull. He's been around."
"Pull?" she said. "Against Harlan Beck?"
"I just worry."
"Baby, I've had him blacklisted at every studio in this town. Beck made two calls. Wesley Thornton couldn't get a job as a grip."
Jace laughed.
"You're so good to me."
"Silly," she said. "Do you know when I knew you were mine? The day he pulled you out of those collectors' hands and brought you home like a stray dog. You looked at me like I was the whole sky."
The bed creaked.
"The first twenty years of my life were miserable," Jace said, breathless now. "If it all led to you, I'd go through every day of it again."
"Say it again."
"All of it. Every day."
There was a long silence with only the sounds in it.
I stood there until it ended, because my legs would not move.
