Chapter 6: The Chairman

They brought Harlan Beck to Northlight's boardroom at one in the morning.

He came in between two of my security men, in a silk robe and loafers, with his silver hair still flat on one side.

"Do you have any idea who I am?" he said.

I sat at the head of the long table with a cup of black coffee.

"Harlan Beck," I said. "Sit down."

"I'll have every one of you arrested."

"Sit."

One of the guards pressed a hand on his shoulder, and Beck sat.

He looked around at the glass walls and the framed posters from forty films.

Then he looked at me.

"I know you," he said. "You're the boyfriend. The shipping guy."

"I'm the chairman of Northlight Media Group."

Beck laughed.

It was a short, ugly laugh, and it stopped when no one joined him.

My chief of staff slid a folder across the table to him.

"Beck Pictures releases nine films a year through Northlight's network," she said. "Your contract runs through December. It also lets us end it with a single signature, which Mr. Thornton has."

Beck opened the folder.

His face went from red to gray one page at a time.

"This is not possible," he said. "Thornton. Your name was never on anything."

"I kept it off on purpose."

"Why would a man like you..."

"I wanted someone to love me without knowing what I owned."

I heard how it sounded.

Nobody in the room said anything about it.

Beck wiped his mouth.

"Mr. Thornton, I swear to God I didn't know. I only backed Sonia because she tested well and she was willing to learn. If I'd known she was going up against you, I'd have had her thrown out of the business before she finished her first sentence."
