Chapter 12: The Night After the Papers

I held the last page out to her, and she read it under the porch light.

"She signed it," Morven said.

"Every line."

"She signed everything and didn't ask for a cent."

"She's scared of my mother."

"Good." Morven handed the page back. "So it's signed."

"It's signed."

She looked at me for a long moment, with her hands still in her fleece.

"I said nothing happens until the papers are signed," she said.

"You did."

"I was an idiot."

"You were being fair."

"I'm tired of being fair," Morven said.

She took two steps across the porch and grabbed the front of my shirt in both fists and pulled my mouth down to hers.

It was not gentle.

She kissed me hard and fast, and I made a sound I did not recognize and backed her into the door.

Her fingers dug into my chest.

I got the door open behind her without looking, and we went through it together, stumbling over the mat.

I kicked it shut.

She was already tugging my shirt up, and I let her pull it over my head.

"Three years," she said against my throat. "Three years I watched you walk past me."

"I'm looking now."

"Keep looking."

I pushed her fleece off her shoulders and it hit the floor.

Her scrub top came next, and underneath it she wore a plain gray cotton bra that had seen a lot of shifts.

I put my mouth on the swell of her breast above the edge of it, and she gasped and tipped her head back against the wall.

"Nolan."

"Say it again."

"Nolan, take it off."

I got the clasp open on the second try.

Her breasts were small and heavy at the tips, and her nipples went tight the moment the air touched them.

I took one in my mouth.

She swore, loudly, and her hands went into my hair.

"Stairs," she said. "Now. I can't, I'm going to fall down."

I picked her up.

She wrapped her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck, and I carried her up the staircase with her laughing into my shoulder, and her breath hot on my skin.
