Chapter 7: Security

"Take your hand off her," Morven said.

She did not raise her voice.

She walked across the waiting room and stopped between the guard and Mrs. Frawley, and she looked up at him.

"Dr. MacDonough," the guard said, miserably. "I've got orders."

"I know you do. And I'm the one who signs your overtime."

"The director said..."

"The director isn't a physician," Morven said. "I am. This is my department, and that woman is my patient. She has a failing heart valve, and she walked in with a cardiologist's order. Hospitals don't turn her away. That's the law."

Veronica's smile tightened.

"The law also says I decide who's admitted to this building."

"It doesn't," Morven said. "Look it up."

Veronica turned to the room, to the man with the bloody towel and the old woman and the two coughing kids.

"I'm sorry for the disruption, everyone," she said. "We're dealing with a personal matter. Please be patient."

"It doesn't look personal," said the old woman in the wheelchair, quite clearly. "It looks like a woman getting thrown out."

A few people murmured.

Near the entrance, a young man in a blue jacket had lifted a phone.

He had a camera bag on his shoulder and a logo on his sleeve from the local news station.

I had not noticed him come in.

Veronica noticed him a second later.

"Put that away," she said.
