Chapter 8: The Barn
Green dress Saturday. Nothing that belongs to her.
Someone called "A" was dressing Delaney for my party, and I had no idea who.
I carried that text into the Fisk barn on Friday night, and it was still all I could think about.
The barn was bigger than my whole childhood house.
It stood at the top of a slope of bare apple trees, red and old, with a loft above.
The floor was made of worn gray boards.
On Friday night, Sam, Bev and I were hanging lights from the rafters.
Bev had brought forty buckets of white roses and a stepladder that did not belong to her.
Sam had brought nothing but his hands.
He had pushed the hay bales to the walls and set up sixteen long tables.
He had done it without being asked and without a word.
"I'm not doing this for you," he had said again at the door.
"You said."
"I mean it."
"I believe you, Mr. Fisk."
"Sam."
"Sam."
He'd gone back to the tables.
Now I was at the top of the ladder with a string of bulbs, and Bev was holding the bottom rung.
"Higher," Sam called from across the floor.
"I can't go higher."
"You can if you stand on the top step."
"The sticker says don't stand on the top step."
"The sticker's from a lawyer."
I stepped up.
The ladder shifted, and my stomach dropped.
Then Sam was there.
He had crossed the barn faster than I would have believed.
He caught the ladder with one hand and my ankle with the other.
His palm was rough and warm against the bare skin above my shoe.
"I've got you," he said. "Hook it."
I hooked the bulb string over the beam.
I could have come down then.
I did not come down.
Neither did he let go.
I stood there on the second step from the top with a stranger's hand around my ankle.
