Chapter 7: The Other Woman
We took her to the back room of Bev's flower shop, because it was the only place in Marlow without windows.
Buckets of white roses lined the walls.
Delaney sat on an upturned crate with her suitcase between her feet.
Bev stood in the doorway with a pair of floral shears and no apology.
"I'll just be here," she said. "Trimming."
"Why did you come to the church?" I asked.
Delaney lifted her chin.
"To see your face when you did it."
"When I did what?"
"Stood up. Made a scene."
She almost smiled.
"I knew you would. You've been rehearsing to be the wronged wife for seven years."
Bev made a small noise and snipped a stem in half.
I kept my voice level.
"You wanted me to see the photograph."
"Yes."
"You wanted me to see his hand."
"I wanted you to see that he wasn't yours anymore."
She looked straight at me, and she did not blink.
"I'm not going to say I'm sorry, because I'm not. I've been in love with him for two years."
"He's been married for seven."
"To a woman who never made him happy."
"Did he tell you that?"
"He didn't have to."
"Did he tell you that, Delaney?"
Her mouth tightened.
"He told me you were kind," she said.
"He said kindness was a very small thing to build a life on."
It landed.
I won't pretend it didn't.
"I packed four trays of food for your father's funeral," I said.
"I know."
"You hugged me on that porch."
"I know what I did."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"You think I don't know? You were the only person who came to that house with food and no questions."
