Chapter 6: Sunday Service

On Sunday I wore my navy suit and my wedding ring to church.

Marlow Methodist was full to the back wall.

On a normal Sunday, a third of the pews are empty.

Today every seat was taken, and a hundred and twelve glossy cards sat in people's laps or poked out of their purses.

On Tuesday night I had texted Sam Fisk one word back. Yes.

He had answered with an address and four more words. Bring your own chairs.

Bev walked in with me and sat down on the aisle.

"Spread your feet," she whispered. "If anyone grabs you, I'll bite."

Lukas and Adele were in the third pew on the left, where the Halvorsens have sat for forty years.

His mother had her hand on his sleeve.

He saw me, and the color left his face.

I walked up the aisle alone, in front of every head in the church, and sat down on his other side.

Nobody coughed.

"Leah," he breathed. "Not here."

"Good morning, Lukas."

Adele leaned forward across him and smiled at me.

"Dear. I'm so glad you came. We've all been worried."

The pastor climbed into the pulpit.

He was a gentle, white-haired man, and he had a card in his own hands too.

"Before we begin," he said, "I'd like us to hold a family in our prayers this morning."

My stomach dropped.

"A wife in a season of confusion. A husband who loves her and a mother who is sick with worry.
