Chapter 20: Odette Alone
The King received us in the great hall, in daylight, with no moon to help anyone tell the truth.
The benches were full.
Odette stood alone in the middle of the floor in a pale blue gown, with her hair pinned up and her eyes red.
Beside her stood a thin stranger with a leather bag.
Nobody else stood with her.
Her mother had not come, and Bastian had not come.
I walked in with Elias a pace behind me, and the whole hall turned to look.
"Your Majesty," Odette said, and her voice trembled beautifully. "I came as soon as I could. I did not want to say this in front of everyone, but it is a matter of the law."
"Say it," said the King.
"My sister's bond with the Alpha of Holt has not been broken."
A murmur ran around the hall.
"The Court was swayed by a pretty speech and a Beta's oath. But a mark does not lie. Her mark is still on her shoulder, as plain as the day it was made. I have seen it with my own eyes."
She turned to the thin man.
"This healer saw it too, this morning. He will swear it."
The thin man bowed.
"I saw a bite scar, Your Majesty," he said. "Fresh and red, on the left shoulder. Burning to the touch."
Elias's hand closed on my sleeve and let go.
"If the mark lives," said Odette softly, "then she is still the Alpha's wife. And the Beta has lain with another wolf's mate, in front of two hundred witnesses. The law says he loses his hands."
My stomach dropped.
"That is an old law," said the King.
"It is the law."
"It is." He studied me. "Mara Hallowell. Do you wish to answer this?"
"I wish to be examined," I said.
I saw Odette's face change.
"By whom?" the King asked.
"By your own healer, Your Majesty. Not hers."
