Chapter 14: Breakfast
"He'll believe me," I said. "Because I'm telling the truth."
"Oh, darling." My mother put her earrings in their little velvet tray. "Nobody's ever believed anything because it was true."
I didn't sleep.
Finlay didn't come through the door, because I'd asked him not to.
At eight on the thirtieth I went down to breakfast with my hair pinned up and the mark on my cheek gone yellow.
They were all there.
Alasdair at the head with the newspaper. Elspeth with her porridge and her hearing aid in. Finlay by the window.
My mother at the foot, fresh as a bride, in a pale blue jumper.
And Euan, back from Inverness, tanned and smiling, buttering toast.
"Morning, Ailsa," he said. "Sleep well?"
I sat down without answering.
The housekeeper brought in the kippers and set them at the sideboard.
Euan finished his toast.
Then he wiped his fingers, took a brown envelope from the chair beside him, and slid out a sheet of glossy paper.
